Players in the Walmart supply chain, in particular, saw strong double-digit growth in demand due to Walmart's RFID mandate. This positive market response is very much in line with IDTechEx's predictions for the adoption of UHF RFID technology in other retail industries.

The success of Walmart Licensing has played a major role in spurring usage and boosting demand growth. Retailers across all industries are recognizing the benefits of UHF RFID technology and using it to improve the efficiency of their operations.

One of the major hurdles is the cost of labeling each item, which can be prohibitive for some retailers. Second, the increased use of RFID tags can lead to e-waste if proper recycling measures are not taken, thus creating sustainability issues. Third, there are technical and implementation challenges, especially when it comes to items containing liquids or metals. Finally, the ecosystem for implementing RFID at scale in other retail sectors (outside of apparel and footwear) is not yet fully mature, adding to the complexity of the adoption process.
