Clamshell Card
A Clamshell Card (sometimes called a “clamshell proximity card” or “thick proximity card”) is a rugged and durable RFID access card typically used for long-term use in access control systems. The name “clamshell” comes from the manufacturing process: two plastic shells are fused together, enclosing the RFID chip and antenna inside, which makes the card thicker and more robust than standard PVC cards.
Typical characteristics of clamshell cards include:
- Usually made of ABS, PET, or PVC with a thicker profile (e.g. ~1.8 mm to 3.0 mm or more)
- Embedded RFID chip and antenna sealed within the card, protected from bending, moisture, abrasion
- Often used in 125 kHz low-frequency (LF) proximity systems (such as EM, HID, etc.), though variants in other frequencies may exist
- Typically non-printable or with limited printable surface (some have a writable area or slot for label)
- Long lifespan, high durability, and good environmental resistance
Clamshell cards are a classic and reliable form of proximity card for physical access control systems, especially in scenarios that require stable performance over many years.
